Understand the machine before ordering.

When the ground gets away from you — waist-high grass, nettles, thistles, brambles and tangled weeds — a handheld brushcutter simply isn't enough. The Chipperfield by Spectrum HCS770X is a self-propelled scythe-bar mower built to reclaim large, overgrown areas quickly, cleanly and with far less effort. It's the machine of choice for smallholders, landowners, contractors and grounds-maintenance teams who need to clear rough vegetation on a serious scale.

At its heart is a dependable 212cc Rato four-stroke OHV petrol engine. The overhead-valve design keeps fuel consumption and emissions low while delivering the torque you need to power through the heaviest growth, and the easy-pull recoil starter gets you working within seconds. It's honest, hard-wearing power with running costs to match.

The business end is a reciprocating cutter bar fitted with 19 pairs of scissor-action blades giving a 98cm cutting width. Rather than thrashing through vegetation, the blades shear it cleanly like a pair of scissors — slicing through dense grass, weeds and woody stems that would stall a conventional strimmer, and covering ground at a rate no handheld tool can approach.

Getting the power to the ground are large 330mm pneumatic tractor-pattern tyres that bite into soft, rutted and sloping terrain and keep the machine planted and stable. The self-propelled transmission offers both forward and reverse drive for easy manoeuvring, and when you need to reposition by hand the axle pins disengage to drop the drive into neutral so the mower can be pushed freely.

Long days are made easier by a thoughtfully designed operator station. The handlebars adjust for height to suit your build and reduce fatigue, and offset into three lateral positions — left, centre and right — so you can walk alongside the machine instead of directly behind it. That's a real advantage when you're working through nettles and brambles, keeping you clear of the material being cut.

An adjustable cutting height of 30–80mm lets you tailor the finish to the job, whether you're topping a meadow, clearing scrub or tidying a paddock. Backed by a 2-year warranty, the HCS770X is built to keep earning its place in the shed season after season.
